Explosion protection, the prevention of ignition sources in areas endangered by combustible gases, vapours, mist or dusts in combination with the oxygen content of air, has been a main objective in engineering and physics for many years. Starting with Sir Humphrey Davy’s lamp in 1815 and, ninety years later, Beyling’s essential research in the field of flame transmission, considerable work has been done and produced safe as well as economic and reliable motor drives, process control and monitoring equipment, electric power control apparatus and lighting installations in hazardous zones. The focus of this training course is on electrical apparatus and systems in hazardous areas in chemical plants, oil and gas industry and underground coal mining. The training course intends to present a survey of this field, a snapshot demonstrating the ‘state of the art’. The inspiration for this training course was a series of courses on ‘Explosion Protection’ given in chemical plants and the enthusiastic response to these courses, as well as the progress made in protection techniques, for example in pressurization, in more recent times. This training course is intended for engineers, scientists, plant safety personnel and for the other non engineering personnel in the field of electrical engineering to give an introduction to the basic principles of explosion protection and the relevant protection techniques.



1.       Basic principles of explosion protection; The clasification of hazardous areas; Standards for electrical apparatus and systems in zone 1

2.       Grouping and classification of explosion protected electrical apparatus; Marking and selection of explosion protected apparatus; The different types of protection – constructional requirements.

3.       Analyzers and analyser rooms; Testing explosion protected electrical equipment; Financial considerations – selecting explosion protected electrical equipment.

4.       Inspection, maintenance and repair of explosion protected equipment; Explosion protected apparatus for zone O and zone 2; Cable protection in coal mines and other areas hazardous due to combustible.

5.       Discussion.
